Documents still costing UK businesses millions

Macro 4 logoMACRO 4, the global software solutions provider, has revealed poor document management is still costing UK companies dearly. Research amongst 100 IT directors shows nearly a fifth (18 per cent) of UK businesses spend between 5 and 10 per cent of revenue on document issues. A further 6 per cent of businesses say documentation costs more than 10 per cent 1.

Poor document management can cost a FTSE 100 company up to £400m per year 2. The issue is particularly acute within the retail industry. 27 per cent of retail businesses say documents cost them between 5 and 10 per cent of their annual revenue 3.

Michael Brand, director of the Business Information Logistics division at Macro 4 said: "Our research has found document management costs can be reduced but the issue is overlooked. 81 per cent of IT directors do not consider printing and document management as a strategic concern.4 Our experience has confirmed that companies have little idea of their actual printing costs, and who is printing what, where and in what colour. This whole area lacks ownership, which is why the figures are frequently hidden or underestimated."

Brand continued: "This attitude clearly leaves room for significant cost reduction. By focusing on these costs and processes IT directors can score an easy win in cutting costs and improving efficiency. Our research shows 56 per cent of IT departments have the same budget as last year but 61 per cent report greater demands on that budget0. This means getting the basics right is more important than ever. Documents are essential to businesses and document management technology can help businesses reduce this black hole of cost."
